Vitamin C , also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin required by the body for many important metabolic reactions. Vitamin C is required as a coenzyme for many metabolic pathways. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, with important roles in connective tissue, bone, skin health, the immune system, and cardiovascular disease.

Vitamin C helps produce nitric oxide and reduces cortisol levels. It is also important for the synthesis of collagen, the intracellular segment that maintains tissue strength. It prevents the conversion of nitrates (cigarette smoke, smog, bacon, some vegetables) into carcinogens.
