The liquid dietary supplement Karczoch is made from the leaves of the artichoke plant ( Cynara scolymus L), which has been known for thousands of years in the countries around the Mediterranean as a food and medicine. It was also described by the famous ancient physician and pharmacist Dioscurides, who included it in his pharmacopoeia De Materia Medica . People considered it not only a delicacy, but also a powerful aphrodisiac and believed that its consumption would provide them with a male heir.

It may come as a surprise to many, but the artichoke is among the plants with the highest antioxidant content on the planet. This, along with the abundance of vitamins and minerals in its composition, explains its numerous and diverse health effects. Although its fleshy middle part is most highly valued on the table, the bulk of the beneficial substances are concentrated in the leaves of the plant.

Among the phytochemicals that give artichoke an impressive ORAC index (an indicator of the ability to absorb free radicals), the compounds quercetin, rutin, gallic acid and cynarin stand out.
