Glutamine's effect on cell volume has been proven in several studies.

Bodybuilders can actually gain muscle mass by taking glutamine. Since bodybuilders use a lot of glutamine while training, the immune system relies heavily on this amino acid. Catabolism, or muscle breakdown (loss), can occur if the body uses muscle glutamine for other uses, such as nitrogen transport or to support the immune system.
