Isoflavones belong to the flavonoids (antioxidants). Isoflavones occur naturally in plant foods, such as soy. Isoflavones are known for their hormonal effects.

Isoflavones are also called phytoestrogens (plant estrogens). These phytoestrogens are very similar in effect to the female sex hormone estrogen. This hormone is produced much less during menopause, which can cause symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness and mood swings.
