Description and main properties of turkesterone
Tukresterone is an extract of the plant ajuga turkestanica, distributed in the mountainous regions of Tien Shan and Hisaro Alai in Central Asia, in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. It is a perennial semi-shrub with a powerful root system and stems up to 50 cm high and pointed elliptical leaves. The local population uses the above-ground part for the preparation of tonic drinks (tea), and the dried green leaves and tips - as an herb for relieving stomach disorders. The extract is usually obtained from the shoots of the plant.

The active substances in the composition of ajuga turkestanica include flavonoids, iridoids, phytoecdysteroids (ecdysterone, turkestenone, inokesterone, ayutasterone), diterpenoid phytol and others. The beneficial properties of the extract are mainly due to ecdysteroids - natural steroid hormones produced by some plants and arthropods. These phytochemicals are contained in some foods such as quinoa, spinach and yams, but their amounts there are too small to be effective.

The most bioactive of all ecdysteroids are 20-hydroxyecdysone (ecdysterone) and turkesterone. Due to their unique mechanism of action and their positive effect on muscle growth, these phytochemicals are very popular among athletes involved in bodybuilding and fitness.
