The reason casein is digested more slowly than other proteins is that it is composed of water-insoluble microfractions called casein micelles. When they enter the stomach, they form a kind of gel – a dense protein mass that enzymes cannot “attack” and break down the peptide bonds, normally quickly! Enzymes figuratively tear off small fractions from the surface of the dense mass-gel which are then broken down and absorbed into the small intestine. This process (depending on the amount of casein taken) continues for up to 8 hours until it is completely digested!

Slow Casein by Swedish Supplements is a complex of Micellar and Calcium Caseinate, with the Micellar prevailing!

Calcium caseinate is the most common. Generally speaking, it is obtained from the cream of milk through a process that separates the casein from the whey. For more stability and better solubility, a mineral salt (calcium) is added, hence its name!

Micellar casein is obtained after ultrafiltration and without the addition of chemical substances that would harm its health indicators. Because of this, it is usually the most expensive. It is purified from milk sugar and fat, which makes it ideal for people with lactose intolerance.

The peak release of amino acids is about 3-4 hours after taking it, but the amino acids continue to be released for up to 8 hours after taking it, which is why it is best taken in the evening, before going to bed. However, one of the latest studies shows that taking a protein shake composed of 50% casein and 50% whey protein after training improves recovery!
