PYRUVATE is an endogenously synthesized substance that is also found in some foods and is directly involved in the energy cycle, or Krebs cycle. Although carbohydrates are considered typical energy carriers, they are not available in the body in the form in which we consume them. Their energy is obtained only after their conversion into glucose, which in turn is converted in the cells (via the Krebs cycle) into pyruvate.

Just a few grams of orally administered additional Pyruvate are sufficient to provide energy to the cells for metabolism. The athlete can use Pyruvate as a means of significantly increasing performance (more energy, less fatigue) by adding it together with carbohydrates to his normal diet.
