Description
Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid, a component of the cell membrane, that plays a key role in cell life cycle signaling and specifically in processes related to apoptosis. Phosphatidylserine has been found to have beneficial effects on attention, memory, thought processes, and overall cognitive health.
Description and main properties of phosphatidylserine
Phosphatidylserine is an organophosphorus compound, a derivative of phosphatidic acid, made up of two fatty acids linked by a glycerol molecule to the amino acid serine. It belongs to the family of phospholipids, which are among the main building blocks of cell membranes.
Phosphatidylserine is most abundant in neurons, accounting for 13-15% of all phospholipids in the cerebral cortex. It is concentrated in the cytoplasmic membrane, where it is involved in the activation of a number of signaling pathways. These include Akt, protein kinase C (PKC), and Raf-1, which play important roles in neuronal survival, promote neurite outgrowth, and promote synaptogenesis. Modulating phosphatidylserine levels in the cell membrane of nerve cells has a significant impact on these signaling processes.
Since the human body is able to synthesize it, phosphatidylserine is not considered an essential nutrient. However, its production is a complex process associated with a significant expenditure of energy, which the body of sick or elderly people is often unable to provide. This necessitates its acquisition in the form of food or nutritional supplements, since its deficiency is associated with depression and with a weakening of cognitive functions and memory, especially in older people.
The richest food source of phosphatidylserine is beef brain, some fish - Atlantic mackerel, herring, eel - and by-products - chicken hearts, pork spleen and kidneys, and others - have high levels.
Benefits of taking phosphatidylserine
Supports brain function – one of the most important tasks of phosphatidylserine is to maintain the structural integrity and normal function of brain cells. In addition, it plays a key role in the processes of coordinating the storage, secretion and control of a number of major brain neurotransmitters and their corresponding receptors, which are essential for intercellular communication and support memory, concentration, mood and the perception of new knowledge.
Combats stress and depression – Phosphatidylserine limits the harmful effects of stress not only by maintaining the health of neuronal cell membranes to increase their resistance to it and support their recovery, but also by modulating the work of the body’s natural defenses – the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. This can be especially beneficial for people exposed to chronic stress, in whom the HPA axis is constantly “on”. Clinical studies have shown that taking phosphatidylserine as a dietary supplement reduces the cortisol response to mental and physical stress and contributes to improving mood.
Helps increase exercise performance – scientific studies involving active athletes show that taking phosphatidylserine as a dietary supplement contributes to increased exercise capacity, reduced levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol, reduced muscle pain and faster recovery. In addition, a significant decrease in circulating levels of creatine kinase (an indicator of cell membrane damage and muscle fiber necrosis) has been observed.
