Description

Mimosa pudica, also known as the shy mimosa, is a perennial plant known for its leaves that curl up against the stem for several minutes at the slightest touch. It has been used for years in Ayurvedic medicine to treat a variety of health problems.

Description and main properties of mimosa pudica
This fern-like plant, a member of the legume family, is native to the Caribbean, Central and South America, but is now found in tropical regions around the world. It is also grown indoors because of its relatively rapid leaf movements for a plant. When touched or even moved by air, it curls up against the stem, a defense mechanism against herbivores and adverse weather conditions.

Mimosa pudica possesses both antioxidant and antibacterial properties. The plant contains a variety of substances, including flavonoid C-glycosides, alkaloids, terpenoids, coumarins, saponins, tannins, phenols, and fatty acids. Among the important phytochemicals isolated from mimosa are mimosine, jasmonic acid, betulinic acid, stigmasterol, beta-sitosterol, and others.

The plant has been used for centuries in traditional medicine in various countries to treat a wide range of health problems. It is used to treat wounds, hemorrhoids and ulcers, snake bites, as a remedy for depression and anxiety, and to relieve joint pain.

Mimosa pudica seeds contain a very sticky fat-soluble substance composed of glucuronic acid and xylose, which sticks to almost everything and is an excellent cleanser of the gastrointestinal tract.

Benefits of taking mimosa pudica
Effectively cleanses the gastrointestinal tract - Similar to chia seeds soaked in water, when in contact with liquids, the seeds of mimosa pudica form a slimy, gel-like mass. When the extract from them is ingested, the same thing happens in the digestive system. The resulting sticky gel drags with it harmful deposits in the intestines, parasites and disease-causing bacteria. Since the human gastrointestinal tract lacks enzymes to break down the slimy substance, it passes through it unhindered to cleanse it completely.
Destroys parasites in the intestines – Mechanical cleansing of harmful substances and microorganisms is not the only way in which mimosa seeds contribute to intestinal health. Scientific research shows that their extract effectively destroys roundworms and permanently deactivates their larvae.
Supports Mental Health – The human gut produces a variety of neurotransmitters that play a key role in regulating mood. About 95% of the body’s serotonin, for example, is synthesized in the gut. If their microbiome is disrupted by antibiotics, parasites, or something else, serotonin production can be significantly reduced.
Has antioxidant properties – Mimosa pudica contains phytochemicals and vitamins with antioxidant properties, preventing the formation of harmful free radicals in the body. The plant also contains superoxide dismutase – another powerful antioxidant that is present in the body’s cells, but its concentration decreases with age.
Helps restore the sciatic nerve – A scientific study shows that mimosa pudica extract is 40% more effective in treating sciatic nerve pain than the conventional medication for this problem – the steroid hydrocortisone.

Other beneficial properties of mimosa pudica extract include preventing liver damage from diseases such as Lyme disease and parasitic infections, destroying harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi, aiding wound healing, protecting against stomach ulcers, and more.
