Iron is a key factor in the formation and proper function of red blood cells (erythrocytes). It is found in hemoglobin and myoglobin – proteins found in red blood cells that carry oxygen to body tissues. Iron deficiency is a common nutritional deficiency, especially among women.

When does the need for iron increase:

-pregnancy and breastfeeding;

-intense physical exertion;

-severe blood loss;

– kidney failure (especially with kidney dialysis, which depletes iron from the body);

-presence of an ulcer that can cause blood loss;

-presence of a gastrointestinal disorder that prevents the absorption of iron from food (celiac disease, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, etc.);

- excessive intake of antacids (acid reflux medications), which also interfere with iron absorption;

-veganism and vegetarianism.
