Description
Echinacea is widespread in North America. It has been widely used by Native Americans as a remedy for colds, flu, and other infections. When applied topically, it can heal various wounds (cuts, burns, and insect bites). In fact, the name literally means panacea, because it is considered a cure-all for everything from coughs to cancer.
The herb also contains copper, iron, iodine, potassium, vitamins A, C, and E. Thanks to this combination of ingredients, echinacea works as a natural antibiotic that can suppress the activity of various viruses and stimulate the immune system by activating T cells.
All studies conducted show that although echinacea itself does not cure diseases, it helps the body fight against diseases by making it stronger.
Diseases against which echinacea is effective are breathing problems, bronchitis, sore throat, enlarged prostate glands, urinary tract infections, vaginal (Candida) infections, ear infections (otitis), sinusitis, hay fever (allergic rhinitis). Locally it can help treat eczema, psoriasis, and slow-healing wounds. Echinacea is added to anti-hemorrhoid medications. It is also a strong protector of the skin from the sun's rays.
Despite some claims that Echinacea is free of side effects, research shows that some people may experience allergic reactions, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, muscle aches, nausea, sore throat, temporary numbness of the tongue, and upset stomach.
There are still no official results from trials related to the use of Echinacea by pregnant and breastfeeding women (although there is no evidence that it can cause birth defects), and for children under 12.
It is also worth noting that in Germany, Echinacea is approved for the treatment of colds, upper respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and slow-healing wounds. However, treatment should be limited to a period of 8 weeks. In the United States, its use is considered safe if the doctor's prescription is followed.
Echinacea is best known for its ability to boost the immune system, but it is also used effectively in many other cases:
-Colds, coughs, flu and other inflammations of the upper respiratory tract.
-Swollen lymph nodes, sore throat.
-Urinary tract infections.
-Other minor infections.
-Can help fight herpes and candida.
-Wounds, skin regeneration and skin infections (external use).
-Psoriasis, eczema and inflammatory skin diseases (external use).
-Echinacea stimulates the immune system by activating T-cells.
Echinacea is generally not recommended for use by people with immune system diseases such as HIV, multiple sclerosis, or tuberculosis. The German government does not recommend using echinacea if you have these diseases.
Although there are some restrictions on taking echinacea, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.
Goldenseal’s official name is Hydrastis Canadensis – it is a perennial plant that can be found in woodlands. Due to the uncontrolled and intensive harvesting of its striking yellow root, goldenseal is currently an endangered species and consumers are encouraged to purchase cultivated goldenseal. Fortunately, goldenseal is very easy to grow, the only problem is that the plant must grow for at least four years before its roots can be used.
The uses of goldenseal are countless. In alkaline compounds, it acts as an antibiotic and can be helpful in healing wounds, digestive problems, and urinary tract infections. Some people may use goldenseal as a laxative, to treat inflammation, and to soothe eye irritation caused by dust mites.
Goldenseal is not recommended for use by pregnant women and people with liver problems.
