Spirulina is a biomass of blue-green algae, considered one of the most ancient forms of life on Earth. It has been known and used as a food in various parts of the world for millennia, but in recent years it has been gaining increasing popularity as an alternative to multivitamins, thanks to its wealth of beneficial substances for human health.

Description and main properties of spirulina

Spirulina algae (Arthospira Platensis) are a type of free-floating photosynthetic cyanobacteria, which are distinguished by cylindrical multicellular trichomes in a left-handed spiral. They inhabit warm water bodies with high alkalinity (pH above 8.5) in Africa, Asia and South America. For the normal development of these microorganisms, high temperature and strong light are necessary, as they are autotrophic, that is, they can produce their own food from solar energy, without needing carbon sources.

Arthospira Platensis can withstand temperatures up to 60°C, and in some cases, in the desert, they survive even after the water evaporates and remain on the hot stones at temperatures of about 70°C. This means that the beneficial substances contained in spirulina are fully preserved, while in most other living organisms, a temperature of about 50-54°C is detrimental to the enzymes and the beneficial properties of some vitamins and amino acids.

Spirulina was used as a food source by the Aztecs and some other Native American tribes in Mesoamerica as early as the 16th century, when harvesting from Lake Texcoco and selling it as green cakes was described by an officer in Cortez's entourage. The algae has also been harvested for centuries in Africa, from the many smaller bodies of water around Lake Chad. The dried mass, which can still be found in markets in the region, is traditionally used to make soups or for direct consumption.

Spirulina contains virtually all essential amino acids and fatty acids, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, D, A, E and many minerals – potassium, calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, sodium and zinc. It contains 34 times more iron than spinach and 25 times more beta-carotene than carrots.

Blue spirulina is a special variety of algae with a higher content of phycocyanin, which gives it its deep blue color. This phycobiliprotein has a number of beneficial properties for the kidneys, nervous system, and the body as a whole.

Benefits of taking blue spirulina
It has powerful antioxidant properties – The main active substance in the composition of spirulina – phycocyanin, effectively counteracts free radicals and at the same time contributes to limiting inflammatory processes by inhibiting the signaling molecules that trigger them. The antioxidant properties of spirulina are 280% superior to those of blueberries.
Helps lower blood pressure – The pigment phycocyanin also has proven antihypertensive properties. According to a study conducted in Italy, these are due to a peptide called SP6, which stimulates a process in the body in which nitric oxide is released – a signaling molecule that contributes to the relaxation and dilation of blood vessels.
Helps lose weight and build muscle – Thanks to its high protein content, spirulina helps get rid of excess weight in two ways – it stimulates fat burning by accelerating thermogenesis in the body and at the same time suppresses appetite. It has been found that the high content of essential amino acids in algae contributes to increasing isometric muscle strength and endurance. Spirulina is also an excellent source of iron, which is necessary for energy production and the transport of oxygen to the muscles.
Scientific research suggests that blue spirulina may also help cleanse the body of heavy metals, contribute to lowering cholesterol levels, help improve blood sugar control, and normalize intestinal flora.
