Pterostilbene is a natural chemical compound, very similar in structure and properties to resveratrol. Taken as a dietary supplement, it improves cognitive function, regulates cholesterol and glucose levels, and normalizes the functioning of the cardiovascular system.


Description and main properties of pterostilbene
Pterostilbene is a plant-derived nutrient derived from trans-stilbene. It is found in almonds, several types of blueberries, including blackberries, the leaves and bunches of grapes, and the heartwood of the Indian tree Pterocarpus marsupium.

The compound is a methylated stilbene, which is very similar to resveratrol (a substance found in red wine), but has only one hydroxyl group instead of three (two are replaced by methoxyl). This difference is very important, as hydroxyl groups make it easier for the body to metabolize (break down) the molecule. Fewer hydroxyl groups mean that the substance they belong to will be eliminated more difficultly by the body, which is a positive quality if it is beneficial. It is thanks to this structural difference that pterostilbene remains in the body much longer than resveratrol, which breaks down in about 15 minutes.

As with all polyphenols, the main purpose of pterostilbene is to help the plant containing it resist various pathogens. When ingested by humans, it becomes a powerful antioxidant. This also determines its ability to help with a wide range of diseases, including neurological, cardiovascular, metabolic and hematological disorders.



Benefits of taking pterostilbene
Prevents damage to blood vessels – At the cellular level, vascular pathology results from endothelial dysfunction induced by mechanical stress and leukocyte-generated reactive oxygen species. The prolonged exposure to these factors exhausts the endothelium, which causes an imbalance between oxidative stress and the endogenous antioxidant activity of the circulatory system. Scientific studies have shown that regular intake of pterostilbene significantly reduces the risk of vascular injury induced by reactive oxygen species.
Lowers blood pressure and regulates cholesterol – Although the exact mechanism of action of pterostilbene is not fully understood, it contributes significantly to the normalization of the functioning of the cardiovascular system. A clinical trial conducted by an American university showed that taking pterostilbene for six to eight weeks led to a decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, an increase in LDL cholesterol, and a decrease in body weight.
Supports cognitive function – Pterostilbene promotes neurogenesis in the hippocampus, stimulates the synthesis of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and regulates tyrosine kinase receptor signaling pathways. Thus, it increases neuroplasticity in this part of the brain and supports learning and memory. Its ability to increase levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus also contributes to improving cognitive function.
In addition, pterostilbene contributes to regulating blood sugar and triglyceride levels, slows down the aging process, helps with joint pain, and supports immune system function.
