It transports nitrogen and provides glutamate and glutamine, which stimulate protein synthesis and inhibit protein breakdown in muscles.

As a precursor to glutamate and glutamine, alpha-ketaglutaric acid also serves as a primary metabolic fuel for cells in the gastrointestinal tract. It slows down protein catabolism and increases protein production to support bone formation in skeletal muscle, making it suitable for clinical applications.
