Astaxanthin is a natural pigment (carotenoid) that is synthesized by many bacteria, microalgae and yeast and has powerful antioxidant properties that can be used to maintain skin and heart health, increase endurance, treat joints and restore male fertility. The active ingredient in Mattisson's product - astaxanthin nataxtine™ is completely natural. Its source is the single-celled algae Haematococcus pluvialis. This algae thrives in lakes, rock pools and Arctic marine areas and is not accidentally called "red gold". Astaxanthin is vital for many aquatic animals. Crabs, lobsters, krill, salmon, trout, shrimp eat it, which carry this pigment higher up the food chain. The ketocarotenoid astaxanthin accumulates in the meat and shells of crustaceans, as well as in the meat of salmon and trout, which gives them their corresponding red color. The natural pigment has some chemical similarities to the carotenes lycopene and beta-carotene, which are also plant pigments. However, it is more closely related to oxygenated xanthophylls, including lutein and zeaxanthin, which may improve eye health.
