The liquid food supplement Melisa from the EkaMedica brand is a herbal formula based on an extract from the perennial herbaceous plant lemon balm ( Melissa officinalis ), which is widespread in Europe and Asia. The benefits of lemon balm have been known to people and used in various traditional medical practices for centuries. It is also mentioned in Homer's Iliad, and was also used by the Persian physician and scientist Avicenna, who wrote that it "makes the heart cheerful and happy". The plant is the main ingredient in the alcoholic herbal extract Karmolis, created in the 14th century, which is still available in pharmacies today.

Lemon balm contains a compound known as rosmarinic acid, which helps increase levels of the amino acid GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) in the brain. GABA is a neurotransmitter that prevents overexcitation of the nervous system, thus providing the body with the opportunity to relax and unwind. Thus, the herb contributes to improving mood and internal balance, has a positive effect on sleep cycles and limits the manifestations of anxiety and depression.

Combined with the antioxidant phytochemicals in lemon balm, including eugenol, rosmarinic acid limits oxidative damage to brain cells and slows down their aging. The active substances in the plant have also been found to have pronounced anti-inflammatory properties.

Scientific studies show that lemon balm extract has a beneficial effect on cardiovascular and liver health. The phytochemicals in its composition contribute to lowering triglyceride levels in the blood, improving the regulation of cholesterol synthesis and reducing the risk of heart muscle damage.

Caffeic acid, eugenol, and chlorogenic acid in lemon balm stimulate the secretion of gastric juices and bile, thereby contributing to optimizing digestive processes and at the same time aiding liver detoxification. Terpenes, on the other hand, help relax the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract and relieve symptoms such as cramps, bloating, and gas.

Clinical studies have linked the intake of lemon balm extract to lowering blood glucose levels and limiting oxidative stress associated with type 2 diabetes.
