What is spermidine?
Spermidine is an organic compound with three nitrogen atoms, found in all eukaryotic cells, and was first discovered in semen. It is also present in a number of foods, such as wheat germ, broccoli, mushrooms, and some types of cheese. Its highest content is found in products such as natto (a Japanese fermented soybean dish), shiitake mushrooms, amaranth seeds, and durian fruit.

In the body, spermidine limits energy intake and thus simulates the effects of starvation. In this way, it provokes autophagy - a process of cell renewal that occurs naturally in cells, but can be accelerated by nutritional stress during starvation. Autophagy regulates cellular homeostasis and clears out any damaged or toxic organelles that accumulate over time during the aging process.
