Description and main properties of resveratrol
At the very end of the last millennium, a phenomenon called the “French paradox” came into the public eye. It is based on a series of scientific studies that show that despite a diet extremely rich in saturated fats, especially cheese and butter, the French are among the world leaders in low incidence of cardiovascular diseases. The explanation for this paradox turns out to be quite simple – it is called resveratrol, and it is obtained through the red wine that is beloved by the representatives of this nation.

Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol that consists of two phenolic rings linked by an ethylene bridge. It is present in over 70 plants, most notably in grape skins and seeds, wine, and some other plant foods. The compound is a phytoalexin that plants produce as a defense mechanism to counteract external stressors, including ionizing radiation, insects and other pests, and various disease-causing microorganisms.

Resveratrol has been shown to possess potent antioxidant properties and is effective against a wide range of pathogens, including bacteria and fungi. There are also numerous scientific reports of its other bioactive effects – anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic, cardioprotective, vasorelaxant, phytoestrogenic, and neuroprotective.
