Horse chestnut is an ornamental and medicinal plant. Horse chestnut seeds contain coumarin glycosides, escin (triterpene saponin), flavonoids and the glycoside fraxin. Esculin increases the resistance of capillaries and erythrocytes. This is due to the beneficial effect on the venous wall, the tonic and analgesic effect of the substance in varicose veins, hemorrhoids and thrombophlebitis.
