Hyaluronic acid (HA) provides the fluid matrix necessary for joint lubrication, hydration, and skin regeneration. It is a major component of the extracellular matrix and plays an important role in tissue regeneration.

Due to the activity of the enzyme hyaluronidase, which breaks down HA, and its high metabolism by cells, naturally occurring hyaluronan has a fairly short half-life in tissues.
