Keratins are a group of tough, fibrous proteins that help maintain the health of joints, hair, nails and skin. Keratins provide exceptionally high levels of the amino acid cysteine, which is a rich source of sulfur molecules that nourish and strengthen cartilage. When the sulfur molecules in cysteine bond together, they form very strong bonds called “cysteine bridges.” These “bridges” provide important support for weight-bearing joints. Swanson’s new Premium Brand Keratin, derived from Tibetan wool, provides pure, nutritional hydrolyzed keratin to nourish the body’s connective tissue and maintain healthy skin, hair and nails.
Aging is associated with a loss of skin elasticity and a deterioration in the condition of connective tissue in the body. The amount of the two main components of connective tissue (collagen and keratin) decreases with age, and scientific studies have shown that keratin supplementation can slow the deterioration of the quality of skin, nails and hair due to aging or conditions characterized by high levels of oxidative stress. Keratin has been found to increase the levels of antioxidant enzymes in connective tissue cells. Keratin also stimulates skin cells to reproduce themselves faster, which means there are more cells producing structural proteins, thus improving the health of connective tissue.
A combination of essential vitamins and keratin has been shown in a clinical study to reduce hair loss after washing the hair of women taking the supplement, improve hair strength and growth rates, resulting in shinier, better-quality hair. Nail quality was also affected by keratin supplementation compared to placebo – the tendency of nails to split was improved, as was their strength, resistance to bending and breaking, their overall integrity, smoothness and natural appearance. In addition, skin health was also maintained or improved in women aged 40 to 71 taking keratin supplements – improved skin moisture, reduced wrinkle depth, greater elasticity and smoothness, and reduced skin roughness were all results of taking keratins
