β-Hydroxy β-methylbutyric acid, also known as hydroxymethylbutyrate or HMW, is a naturally occurring substance in the human body that is used as a dietary supplement by athletes. It is also included in some medical foods for patients recovering from wounds or suffering from muscle wasting due to cancer or AIDS.


Description and main properties of HMB
The human body produces hydroxymethylbutyrate when it breaks down L-leucine, an essential branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) that plays a key role in protein synthesis and muscle repair. Like its metabolic precursor, leucine, HMW increases protein synthesis in skeletal muscle by phosphorylating the mTOR enzyme. Supplementation also increases growth hormone secretion in response to endurance exercise.

In healthy adults, hydroxymethylbutyrate contributes to increasing muscle size and strength and lean body mass, reducing skeletal muscle damage during physical exertion, improving aerobic exercise performance, and speeding up recovery.

Its use also helps to preserve or increase lean body mass and muscle strength in people suffering from age-related atrophy. This is due to its ability to inhibit protein breakdown in muscle tissue.

In clinical trials to date, no negative effects have been found with long-term use of hydroxymethylbutyrate as a dietary supplement in adults.

Application: HMB is an amino acid that contributes to the normal condition of muscles.

Recommended daily dose of the product: 2 capsules daily (preferably 20 minutes before training).
