Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that is needed to form vitamin B3 (niacin). Tryptophan is used by the brain to produce serotonin, a vital neurotransmitter that carries nerve impulses from one cell to another and is responsible for restful sleep. Therefore, Tryptophan helps fight depression, insomnia and stabilize mood.
Moreover, Tryptophan relieves stress, has a beneficial effect on the heart, controls body weight by reducing appetite and increasing the secretion of growth hormone, helps against migraines and reduces some of the harmful effects of nicotine. It is assumed that insufficient levels of Tryptophan alter serotonin levels in the brain, which interferes with the conduction of nerve impulses.
