Folic acid is a form of water-soluble vitamin B. Folate occurs naturally in food, and folic acid is the synthetic form of this vitamin.
Foods that are high in folate include green leafy vegetables (such as spinach, broccoli, and lettuce), asparagus, fruits (such as bananas, melons, and lemons), beans, mushrooms, meat, and orange and tomato juice.

Folic acid is used to prevent and treat low levels of folate in the blood (folic acid deficiency) and its complications, including "tired blood" (anemia) and the inability of the intestines to absorb nutrients properly. Folic acid is also used for other conditions often associated with folate deficiency, including liver disease.

Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant take folic acid to prevent miscarriage and birth problems.
