What is amygdalin (“vitamin B17”)?

Amygdalin is a cyanogenic glycoside - a natural compound that is found in the highest amounts in apricot kernels. Other food sources of naturally occurring amygdalin include bitter almonds, plum and cherry pits, apple and pear seeds.

French chemists Robiquet and Boutron-Charlard first isolated amygdalin from bitter almond kernels in 1830. Fifteen years later, the compound was already being used for treatment in Russia. In the United States, its use for medicinal purposes began later, in the 1920s.

Is amygdalin a vitamin? No. Since the body does not need it for its normal functions (although it cannot synthesize it), it is not a true vitamin. The reason why amygdalin is still popularly known as “vitamin B17” is that it was called that by ancient researchers in the past, and this name has survived to this day.

In 1920, Dr. Ernst T. Krebs advocated the use of amygdalin as a means that could be successfully included in the therapy of oncological problems. Later, his son, Ernst T. Krebs Jr., continued his work and in 1952 synthesized a synthetic version of amygdalin, known as laetrile. Laetrile is the purified form of amygdalin, as laetrile derives from the terms left-handed and mandelonitrile.

The name "vitamin B17" was introduced for laetrile by E. T. Krebs Jr. and remains the most popular to this day.

After ingestion, amygdalin breaks down in the body into several compounds – hydrogen cyanide, benzaldehyde, and prunazine. Hydrogen cyanide has been found to be the main component of amygdalin responsible for its therapeutic effects.

Apart from the key application for which it is most popular, amygdalin ("vitamin B17") has other beneficial properties – it is useful for hypertension (high blood pressure), asthma and bronchitis. Since it has a well-pronounced analgesic effect, it is also used to relieve pain in arthritis.

Why does the Sports & Health Solutions product also contain acerola?

Acerola is a small flowering shrub native to subtropical and tropical regions, and its berries are the richest natural source of vitamin C.
