Description
Marshmallow is a perennial herb that has been used for thousands of years to relieve digestive, respiratory, and skin problems. Its scientifically proven properties make it an indispensable ingredient in many modern medications for the treatment of coughs, sore throats, and gastrointestinal tract.
Description and main properties of marshmallow
The homeland of the well-known in Bulgarian traditional medical practices marshmallow (Althaea officinalis), also called medicinal marshmallow, white mallow, ox-eye and marshmallow, is Europe and North Africa. The herb is a perennial medicinal plant that is found in places with high humidity at an altitude below 1000 meters. Its medicinal properties are mainly due to the mucilage substances in its composition, the content of which is highest in the roots.
The first records of marshmallow being used as a medicinal herb date back to the 9th century BC, when the ancient Greeks used it to treat wounds and sore throats. An ointment made from its pith was a popular remedy for toothaches and bee stings. Over the following centuries, the range of marshmallow’s medicinal uses expanded significantly. Arab physicians prepared a poultice from its crushed leaves to relieve inflammation, the Romans discovered that it had an excellent laxative effect, and by the early Middle Ages, it was being used to treat everything from stomach aches to lung problems and insomnia.
More than 2,000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians used the roots of the marshmallow to make sweet treats intended as gifts to the gods and for feasting the pharaohs and their entourage. The Arabs used them to make some types of halva. In the 19th century, French chefs began to crush the pulp with sugar to make fluffy candies, the predecessors of the marshmallows popular overseas. However, the process of extracting the juice was quite laborious and it was gradually replaced with gelatin.
Health effects of marshmallow root
→ Supports digestive health – The mucilaginous substances in the roots form a protective layer on the organs of the gastrointestinal tract, which has a powerful soothing, anti-inflammatory and carminative effect. They also protect the esophagus from the reflux of stomach juices that cause heartburn and reflux. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, mucus soothes irritated mucous membranes and smooth muscles of the intestines, supporting the natural repair of any damage.
→ Helps treat coughs, colds, and sore throats – Similarly, marshmallow root helps relieve upper respiratory tract problems. The mucus coats the throat and relieves irritation and pain. A 2018 study found that marshmallow is particularly effective in relieving dry coughs. Earlier studies also found that it can help treat coughs caused by colds, bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions.
→ Helps relieve various skin problems – Marshmallow root extract has been found to stimulate phagocytosis and the release of oxygen radicals and leukotrienes from neutrophil granulocytes. The secretion of cytokines – interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) – has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect, thanks to which the herb contributes to the relief of symptoms of eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, insect bites and burns.
The active substances in marshmallow roots also have pain-relieving and diuretic effects, help neutralize free radicals, and support heart health by improving the blood lipid profile.
