Description

Maca is a plant that has been used by some communities in Peru for thousands of years as a food and remedy for various health problems. In recent decades, it has enjoyed growing popularity worldwide as a natural remedy for infertility and low libido.

What are the health effects of maca root?

Contributes to increasing energy levels - Thanks to its rich nutritional content and its adaptogenic properties, maca has a positive effect on energy and tone. The plant is very rich in proteins, minerals and phytonutrients, especially B vitamins, known for their beneficial effects on the activity of the central nervous system. This rich composition also contributes to a significant increase in energy levels in a sustainable way.

Helps improve mood – In the hectic daily life of modern society, stress is inevitable. Maca contributes to its reduction through its adaptogenic properties, thanks to which it participates in the regulation of hormone production by the endocrine system. This makes the root a powerful tool for reducing stress and anxiety and improving mood.

Supports sexual health – The aphrodisiac properties of maca have been known for millennia. They, as well as most of the other health benefits of the root, are due to its beneficial effects on hormonal levels. In men, maca increases not only libido and stamina, but also fertility by improving the quality, motility and quantity of sperm. The active substances in the plant also support reproductive function in women, and also help to reduce the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome and menopause.

Maca root has also been found to have a beneficial effect on cognitive function, contribute to lowering blood pressure levels, aid in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, and maintain skin health.

What is maca?

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is sometimes called Peruvian ginseng. The plant is related to cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and horseradish and has been cultivated for over two millennia by some peoples in the Andes because it is one of the few species capable of surviving the harsh high-altitude conditions. It is a root vegetable that grows in fertile soils at altitudes of over 4,000 meters and is very efficient at extracting minerals from the soil.

Po makka, which somewhat resembles a turnip, is used by the local population to make soups, breads, porridges, and fermented beverages, as well as to treat a wide range of medical conditions, including reproductive problems, respiratory problems, and rheumatism.

According to local folklore, ancient Indian warriors consumed maca before battle to increase strength and stamina. Later, however, chiefs began to forbid them from doing so to protect their enemy's women from their increased libido. The Incas added it to their medicinal mixtures to increase energy, tone, stamina, and strength.

Maca roots are high in fiber, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. They also contain other bioactive compounds, including macamides, macaridine, alkaloids, and glucosinolates, which are responsible for many of the plant's health benefits.
